Outage Safety

The following tips provide an excellent starting point for keeping safety in the forefront during outages:

  • If the wiring leading to your home or your service panel seems damaged or compromised in any way, stay back. Maintain at least 11 metres from downed wires. Immediately call 1-877-310-4937.
  • If your house or basement has flooded, do not walk in or touch standing water as it may be energized by the electrical system in your home. No part of a flooded home should be considered safe.
  • Having multiple sources of light is a key outage requirement to ensure you and your family can move around the home safely. Equip your home with flashlights and lanterns, as well as an ample supply of batteries to keep them running.
  • Avoiding the use of candles is highly advisable for safety reasons. If you must use them, be sure they are far away from flammable objects, always out-of-reach of children, and never unattended. Avoid walking around your home with lit candles. Always extinguish candles before going to bed.
  • NEVER use gas stoves or BBQ's as sources of heat, they produce deadly carbon monoxide (CO) gas.
  • NEVER run a generator in the garage, in the home or even too close to the house, as they also produce CO.
  • Never attempt repairs yourself. Hire an ESA licensed electrical contractor.
  • To report an outage by phone at Burlington Hydro during business hours (8:30 am to 4:30 pm) call 905-332-1851. After business hours or on weekends, please call 877-310-4937.
  • During extended outages and extreme weather events, follow @BurlingtonHydro on Twitter for the most up to date information.

Preparing for Power Outages

Planning and preparing ahead is one of the best ways to keep your home and family safe during a power outage. Prepare as you would for any emergency.

  • Create an emergency supplies kit and keep it in a handy location known to all family members.
  • Be equipped with working flashlights and have an ample supply of batteries to keep them running. New LED style lanterns are ideal for lighting up entire rooms and providing long-lasting protection.
  • Ensure you have provisions to charge your cell phone and laptop from your vehicle
  • If you do not have cell phone, ensure one of your home phones is a model that does require electricity to operate.
  • Have a list of emergency contact numbers handy.
  • Turn off and unplug unnecessary electrical equipment
  • Discuss key safety considerations for all family members that are of age
  • If time permits, and there is an expectation of outages, fill up your vehicle's gas tank
